Maintenance Cor-Ten

COR-TEN

Rustic. Refined. Elegant.

The corrosion resistance & tensile strength of weathering Cor-Ten steel, result in extreme durability with a natural look unlike any other material. Providing a beautiful patina over time, Cor-Ten is a unique and rare solution for a fenestration system.

Cor-Ten steel is a high-resistance, self-passivating alloy containing copper, chrome, and phosphorus. Characterized by a high resistance to corrosion and high tensile strength, these alloys are self-protective through the formation of a superficial coating that prevents the progressive extending of the corrosion process. Brombal, through its technology, innovation, and dedication, was the first to use this material for windows and doors, producing profiles with unique features particularly appreciated in the architectural world.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANING

Environmental residue inevitably finds its way onto windows and doors. Microscopic build up can form from different environmental elements such as dirt, debris, salt, air, and pollution. In addition, biological growth including mildew, can also develop on northern-facing facades, under eaves, or on any heavily shaded surface that remains damp. Over time, pollutants can slowly erode the paint coating, leading to unsightly aesthetics, and potentially, corrosion. The only solution to keeping Brombal windows and doors in pristine condition is thorough and consistent cleaning of the surface.

HOW TO CLEAN COR-TEN

WARNING

Windows and Doors are very sensitive to scratches!
NEVER use pointed objects, sharp tools, razors, etc on glass or frame surfaces.

GLASS

Use plenty of CLEAN water and a mild household cleaning agent, such as soap, and apply with a clean cloth or sponge. Exchange water frequently ensuring there is no sand/dirt in the solution. Rinse cloths/sponges frequently.

COR-TEN

Never use acid or harsh solutions which could ruin the finish of the profile. The use of detergents may also result in the removal of the protective patina which can result in oxidation. Never use steel wool for cleaning. Warm water may be safely applied using a soft, clean cloth. All dirt and debris should be removed from gasketing, thresholds and between all frame surfaces. After the surfaces are dry, natural beeswax can be applied to the frame surfaces. Contact a Brombal representative before applying any cleaners stronger than non-alkaline detergent.

WHAT YOU NEED:
TOOLS AND PRODUCTS

  • Cor-ten colored carnauba wax
  • Sponge

Put the wax on the sponge. Apply the wax on the surface (wax should be applied once a year or when necessary). When applying the wax, avoid excess pressure as small particles from the sponge can stick to the surface and may be hard to remove. Bear in mind – this depends on the wear and tear as well.

For more information refer to Brombal’s policies and warranty.

HOW TO CLEAN GLASS

Thanks to the high resistance of the alloy OT67 in all environments, burnished brass windows and doors require very little maintenance. In any case, never use detergents or steel wool for cleaning, only mild liquids: it is inadvisable to leave too much liquid on the surface of the section since it could promote further oxidation. The cleaning should be carried out with a cotton towel using a mild solution of water and mild detergent (pH between 5 and 8) followed by a thorough rinsing with clean water and drying. Some solvents, alkaline or acid, can degrade the coatings. Before using any type of chemical make sure it is suitable for the finishing in question.
